From stunning goals to unexpected social media moments, these viral footballers have captured global attention during the FIFA World Cup for more than just their performances.

Every four years, the FIFA World Cup takes place and makes viewers all around the world go into a frenzy over which country will come out the victor, and every time, certain footballers stand out not only for their sportsmanship, but for their undeniable charisma, and sometimes, reasons no one saw coming.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Ronaldo, one of the world’s most famous athletes today, Ronaldo had gone viral at a time when social media was not as prominent as it is today. At just 18 years of age, the Portuguese football player delivered a mesmerizing performance against Manchester United. The opposing manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was so impressed by the young winger’s speed and skill that he signed him shortly after. He helped win UEFA Champion League and after transferring to Real Madrid, became the club’s all-time leading scorer. What cemented his legacy as an international player was winning Portugal its first major international trophies at UEFA Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

TIM PAYNE

One of the most recurring names of the 2026 FIFA season, New Zealand football player Tim Payne caught global attention when an Argentinian social media influencer Valen Scarsini was on the lookout for what he called “the least known player”. JUDE BELLINGHAM

English football player Jude Bellingham for Real Madrid has gone viral for England’s dramatic 3-2 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 win against Mexico, when he scored two goals in just 98 seconds, leading to victory for England. This was one of the fastest braces in World Cup history. He is one of the best standout players of the tournament this year.

KYLIAN MBAPPE

French player Kylian Mbappe first went viral back in 2018 at the age of 19, when he scored twice against Argentina and later in the World Cup finale. He went on to become only the second teenager in history (after Pelé) to score in a World Cup final. He has become an even bigger sensation online this season in what has come to be known as the “Dictator Mbappe memes”. This first began in 2024 when he threatened to sue a French influencer for jokingly naming a kebab dish after him. This phenomenon resurfaced this year with rumours spreading that Mbappe was the reason Real Madrid parted ways with manager Xabi Alonso. Although this was confirmed to be nothing more than rumours, the memes gained wide traction all over social media.

ERLING HAALAND

Norwegian footballer Erling Haaland’s performances has made him one of the most talked about athletes this season, particularly, Norway’s 2-1 win over five-time win against Brazil in the Round of 16. Additionally, several AI-generated videos and memes featuring him have spread across the internet. One showed him reacting to his own reflection in a restaurant, even though it was a fictional comedy skit. He has responded to some of the memes, like the one comparing him to the Majin Buu from Dragon Ball Z.

MESSI

Lionel Messi’s popularity as a football player does not come from a single viral moment like most of the players mentioned previously. He stood out in his early years for his dribbling style and passion and had helped Barcelona win multiple league titles and UEFA Champions League trophies while becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer. His international legacy was cemented after leading Argentina to the World Cup title.
