ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center has announced a landmark scientific breakthrough in regenerative medicine, developing an advanced technique to generate brain stem cells derived from a patient’s own cells. The achievement makes Abu Dhabi the first centre in the Middle East to join a select group of leading global institutions advancing this promising approach to treating neurological diseases, placing the UAE firmly on the map of cutting-edge medical research.

The process begins with a small sample taken from a patient’s skin or blood. Using advanced virus-free cellular reprogramming techniques, these cells are returned to an early developmental stage known as pluripotency, at which point they regain the ability to develop into many different specialised cell types. Through carefully designed scientific protocols, these pluripotent cells are then directed to become brain stem cells capable of repairing or replacing damaged neural tissue.

The breakthrough carries significant implications for the future treatment of complex neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and other disorders that remain major challenges in modern medicine.

A key advantage of the technique is that the cells used originate from the patient themselves, significantly reducing the risk of immune rejection following transplantation and potentially limiting the need for long-term immunosuppressive medications.

Researchers have indicated the next phase will focus on scaling up cell production, standardising laboratory protocols and developing manufacturing processes that comply with international regulatory standards in preparation for future clinical applications.

The achievement reflects the UAE’s growing stature as an emerging global hub for life sciences, underpinned by sustained government investment in scientific research and medical innovation.
