DUBAI: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has implemented three major Sheikh Zayed Road upgrades to boost capacity and ease traffic flow in key areas. These improvements align with Dubai’s rapid urban expansion and RTA’s strategy to enhance road network efficiency.
Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance, highlighted Sheikh Zayed Road’s importance as a key transport corridor, serving as a hub for commercial, financial, and residential districts, including Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and major hotels, banks, and global corporations. He emphasised that these upgrades will significantly enhance commuting and commercial activity.
The first upgrade involves extending merging distances between Umm Al Sheif Street and Al Manara Street towards Abu Dhabi, along with an additional lane for traffic heading towards Al Manara. This change is expected to increase capacity by 30%, improving vehicle entry and exit flows.
The second enhancement focuses on the service road exit near Shangri-La Hotel, leading to the First Interchange near Dubai Mall. The upgrade includes expanding merging distances between the service road entry and the exits towards Al Safa Street and Dubai Mall, aiming to reduce congestion at this high-traffic zone.
The third improvement extends the merging distance between Al Marabi Street and Al Manara Street towards Abu Dhabi. This upgrade is designed to ease congestion at merging points, shorten wait times, and improve peak-hour traffic movement.
These Sheikh Zayed Road upgrades reflect RTA’s ongoing commitment to enhancing Dubai’s transport infrastructure, ensuring smoother mobility across the emirate.
