The UAE has launched the Al Dhafra Solar PV plant — a 2 GW renewable energy project that now supplies clean electricity to over 200,000 homes while cutting millions of tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates has taken a major step in its clean energy ambitions with the full operation of the Al Dhafra Solar PV project, one of the world’s largest single‑site solar power plants. Located about 35 km south of Abu Dhabi city, the facility has a capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), enabling it to generate enough electricity to power more than 200,000 homes across the UAE.

Developed through a partnership between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), TAQA, EDF Renewables and JinkoPower, and procured by Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project spans over 20 square kilometres of desert terrain and uses nearly 4 million advanced bifacial solar panels. These panels capture sunlight from both front and back surfaces, helping to maximise efficiency in the region’s harsh desert environment.

Al Dhafra’s commercial operation contributes significantly to the UAE’s renewable energy targets and supports broader goals to diversify the energy mix and reduce carbon emissions. The plant is estimated to displace about 2.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to a lower‑carbon future.

The project’s successful deployment reflects growing technological innovation and international collaboration in the Gulf’s renewable sector. As the UAE continues to expand its portfolio of solar and other clean energy sources, the Al Dhafra Solar PV plant stands as a flagship example of how utility‑scale solar projects can make meaningful contributions to energy security and sustainability in the region.
