Dubai International Airport witnessed a historic moment as the first Emirates flights powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) provided by Shell Aviation took off. Emirates flight EK 412, headed for Sydney on October 24, was among the first to utilize SAF.

Shell Aviation supplied 315,000 gallons of blended SAF for use at Dubai’s aviation hub. This landmark supply has allowed Emirates to operate numerous missions in recent weeks. The SAF supplied was a blend of 40% neat SAF and 60% conventional Jet A-1 fuel, making it chemically identical to conventional jet fuel and suitable for integration into existing airport fuel infrastructure and the entire Emirates fleet without requiring any modifications.

SAF, in its neat form, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to conventional jet fuel. Emirates is actively tracking the delivery, usage, and environmental benefits of SAF through Avelia, Shell Aviation’s blockchain-powered book and claim solution.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions. He expressed hope that this collaboration with Shell Aviation would inspire other producers to make SAF readily available at major aviation hubs like Dubai and throughout their network.

Jan Toschka, President of Shell Aviation, praised the collaboration’s success in enabling SAF use in the UAE and the wider region. Earlier this year, Emirates and Shell signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore sustainable travel and technology-driven experiences.

Emirates’ long-standing environmental efforts span three focus areas: reducing emissions, responsible consumption, and wildlife and habitat preservation. The airline has allocated a US$200 million fund for R&D projects aimed at reducing the impact of fossil fuels in aviation.

Emirates remains at the forefront of SAF research, actively advocating for its higher blends, performance, safety, and reliability. The airline first began using SAF in 2017 and continues to support its expanded use through industry collaboration and government engagements.

As Emirates pioneers the adoption of SAF in Dubai, the aviation industry takes a significant step toward more sustainable and eco-friendly air travel.
