The UAE has launched Naseej, a national initiative aimed at creating a circular textile economy and reducing waste.
ABU DHABI: The UAE has launched Naseej, the National Initiative for Textile Circularity, under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, marking a major step towards transforming the country’s textile sector into a circular economy model.
Developed through a partnership between the National Projects Office, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Emirates Foundation and Tadweer Group, Naseej serves as a national platform designed to coordinate policy, industry action, research and public engagement across the textile value chain.
The initiative seeks to move the sector away from the traditional pattern of consumption and disposal towards a system that maximises resource efficiency, retains economic value and supports sustainable development. According to official estimates, the UAE generates around 220,000 tonnes of textile waste annually, highlighting the need for a comprehensive national response.
Naseej is built around five strategic pillars: collection and recycling, awareness and outreach, behavioural research, policies and regulations, and circular business and innovation. Together, these areas aim to strengthen recycling infrastructure, encourage responsible consumption and accelerate the adoption of sustainable textile practices across the country.
Officials say the initiative reflects the UAE’s long-term vision for innovation-led growth and environmental stewardship. It also supports the objectives of the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2031 by aligning government efforts, industry participation and community engagement under a unified national framework.
As part of its launch activities, Naseej will host “The Fabric of Possibility” at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi from June 5 to 7. The interactive event will encourage residents and families to explore the impact of textile waste and discover practical sustainability solutions.
With Naseej now in place, the UAE aims to position itself as a global leader in circular economy implementation while creating a more sustainable and resource-efficient future for generations to come.
