UAE names street after Doctor of Indian Origin for his Healthcare contributions

ABU DHABI: A street in Abu Dhabi has been named after an 84-year-old Indian doctor to honour his contributions to healthcare in the UAE. Dr. George Matthew, who arrived in the UAE in 1967, has been pivotal in advancing medical services in the country.

The road near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq will now be called George Matthew Street, as part of the city’s effort to recognize key figures who have helped shape its development.

Dr. Matthew, fondly known as Matyous among locals, began his journey in Al Ain and played a crucial role in establishing the region’s healthcare system. Over the years, he held important positions like Medical Director and Health Authority Consultant, contributing significantly to modern medicine in the UAE.

His dedication to education and training has been instrumental, shaping many healthcare professionals in the region. In recognition of his service, Dr. Matthew and his family were granted UAE citizenship a decade ago.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Matthew expressed gratitude for the recognition and remains committed to serving the country’s health sector.
