ABU DHABI: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. He becomes the first pope to be born in the United States and also holds Peruvian citizenship, reflecting his long service in Latin America. The election was concluded on the second day of the papal conclave, with 133 cardinals selecting him as leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

Pope Leo XIV brings a diverse international background to his new role, having spent many years in Peru. His appointment marks a historic first for the papacy, as no previous pope has hailed from the United States. His global perspective is expected to influence his vision for the Catholic Church in an increasingly interconnected world.

In response to his election, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan sent a congratulatory message to Pope Leo XIV, wishing him success in his new role. The message expressed hopes for continued promotion of peace, harmony, and mutual understanding worldwide.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, also sent similar messages of congratulations to the new Pope.

The UAE leadership’s messages reflect the country’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence, welcoming Pope Leo XIV’s leadership at a time of global need for compassion and unity.
