Super Nintendo World: The ‘Mario’ scape of your dreams soon to be a reality!

The world’s first Super Nintendo World is set to open on the premises of the Osaka-based Universal Studios Japan in a delightful announcement that came directly from inside the park’s newly revealed Bowser Castle Monday.

Executive producer Thomas Geraghty of Universal Creative — the innovation and creative arm of Universal Studios — said the opening day is anticipated for February 4, 2021.

In an experience that “can be found nowhere else in the world” the plentiful attractions are based on the uber popular Mario game series, first launched in the 80s, also set to include walk-in restaurants and gift shops.

In addition to the conventional rides, the entire Super Nintendo World will boast an immersive atmosphere wherein guests can compete against other gamers in the park.

“It will provide the first-ever ‘Asobi’ [Japanese term for play] experience for our guests,” said Geraghty, adding that visitors will be able to jump up and smack “question blocks” to collect virtual coins — sound familiar?

Guests can also purchase Power-up Bands, a wristband that can be linked to a smartphone app, where they can store these virtual coins and keys.

But Bowser Castle, with its stone walls, iron fences and a large statue of the ‘Koopa king’ Mario antagonist is what will really get the gears rolling.

Here’s where guests will unearth the world’s first officially recognised Mario Kart ride, named “Koopa’s Challenge.”

Headsets on, the players will dive right into the popular racing hub, guided along by augmented reality, projection mapping and special effects. Buckle tight, and don’t fall off the Rainbow Road!

“Guests will race through the Mushroom Kingdom, steering their way around the track, throwing shells at Koopa Lane, racing alongside Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach,” cheered Geraghty.

Other main attractions revealed Monday included the Princess Peach Castle and Yoshi’s Adventure.

The park springs from the efforts spanning over six years between Universal Creative and the Nintendo Creative team, led by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and representative director of Nintendo.

It was originally scheduled to open in 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
