WASHINGTON, D.C.: United Nations officials have strongly criticised former US President Donald Trump’s alleged plan to seize control of Gaza and forcibly deport its population. They warn that such actions would be clear violations of international law and set a dangerous precedent for global conflicts.
Over 20 UN human rights experts, including Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, denounced Trump’s threats. They described the proposed forced displacement as a “horrific” breach of international law that could trigger a wave of similar actions by other nations, worsening global instability.
The experts emphasised that forcibly relocating Palestinians would break fundamental legal principles and fuel further human rights abuses. They warned that if a global power like the US normalised such actions, other nations might follow, leading to more territorial conflicts and violations of sovereignty.
Francesca Albanese dismissed Trump’s plan as “nonsense,” reinforcing that international law strictly prohibits forced transfers. She underscored that Gaza’s population has already suffered immensely from decades of occupation and conflict, and any forced removal would be a blatant violation of their rights.
The criticism comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, where the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has drawn international condemnation. UN officials stress that diplomatic solutions, not military force, should be the path forward.
