BRASILIA: The UAE has actively participated in the first BRICS Sherpa meeting of 2025, which was held in Brasilia, Brazil. This marks a significant moment as Brazil assumes the presidency of the influential BRICS group for this year. The event set the stage for critical discussions aimed at strengthening global cooperation on various fronts.

Headed by Khamis Al Shemaili, the UAE delegation included key figures such as the Secretary-General of the Council for Diplomatic and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Al Shemaili also serves as the Assistant Sherpa of the UAE to the BRICS group, representing the nation’s commitment to fostering stronger multilateral ties within the BRICS framework.

During the meeting, the focus was on priorities outlined by Brazil’s BRICS presidency for 2025, which include expanding cooperation in health, climate change initiatives, and boosting trade and investment across member nations. These areas were deemed crucial in light of the global challenges that require coordinated efforts and collective action.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the UAE delegation engaged in productive bilateral talks with representatives from countries like Egypt, Russia, Brazil, and Ethiopia. These discussions were centred around enhancing bilateral relations and exploring areas of mutual interest.

The UAE’s participation in this BRICS Sherpa meeting reflects its belief in the importance of global partnerships to address pressing issues such as climate change, health, and economic growth.
