GENEVA: As tensions continue to rise, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel could lead to severe humanitarian consequences. If violence intensifies, the Israel Iran civilian toll is expected to worsen dramatically, affecting communities far beyond the frontlines.
Nicolas Von Arx, ICRC’s Regional Director for the Near and Middle East, issued a strong appeal for restraint: “We call for respect of international humanitarian law and urge immediate de-escalation. Decisive political action is urgently needed to stop the killing and put an end to destruction.”
He highlighted the toll already suffered by ordinary people. Civilians in both Iran and Israel have lost lives and homes. Some families have fled, while others live in constant fear, sheltering through the night. Even members of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement have been injured in the violence.
“In Iran, many families are fleeing for safety. In Israel, families are repeatedly forced into shelters in the middle of the night,” Von Arx added.
The ICRC reiterated that every civilian casualty is a tragedy and urged all sides to remember their legal and moral responsibilities under international humanitarian law. The organisation continues to support those affected but stressed that only de-escalation and dialogue can prevent further suffering.
With the conflict in its fifth day and risks of escalation growing, the ICRC’s message is clear: political will and respect for humanitarian norms are urgently needed to avoid an even heavier Israel Iran civilian toll.
