DUBAI: Indonesia has highlighted the importance of ethical practices in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI), stressing that AI should benefit society while minimising its associated risks.
At the Tech & Telco Summit 2025, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, explained that ethical AI practices are essential to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems. He noted that about 80% of companies using AI have adopted ethical guidelines, which is a significant improvement.
Nezar emphasised that AI must be transparent, allowing the public to understand and trust its processes. Furthermore, AI systems should be free from harmful bias and promote inclusivity, ensuring that no group is discriminated against. The protection of user data is another crucial aspect, with clear procedures needed to inform users about the use of their personal data in AI development.
The deputy minister also called for robust monitoring mechanisms, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare. He stressed that AI’s use in such sectors, along with financial services, requires careful supervision to ensure it aligns with ethical standards and supports human well-being.
Nezar concluded by reaffirming Indonesia’s stance on AI: it must be ethical, fair, and responsible, always prioritising human needs over technological advancement.
Indonesia’s advocacy for ethical AI reflects its commitment to ensuring that AI technology benefits all, while mitigating risks and addressing concerns around transparency, accountability, and bias. By promoting these principles, Indonesia aims to contribute to the global conversation on how AI should be developed and utilised in a responsible manner.
