GAZA, DOHA, CAIRO: A ceasefire has officially commenced in Gaza today, initiating a 42-day first phase following 15 months of relentless Israeli aggression.

The ceasefire came into effect at 11:15 a.m., with humanitarian aid trucks entering the region just minutes later. The United Nations confirmed the delivery of the first aid convoys, marking a critical step in addressing the escalating humanitarian crisis. The Head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHAoPt) stated on X, “A massive effort has been underway over the past days from humanitarian partners to load and prepare to distribute a surge of aid across all of Gaza.”

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, also confirmed progress in the ceasefire, stating on X that three hostages—two Israeli citizens with Romanian and British nationalities among them—will be released today. He added, “Thus, the ceasefire has begun.”

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza revealed harrowing statistics today, reporting that Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, have led to the deaths of at least 46,913 Palestinians, with 110,750 others injured.

The ceasefire, a product of intense diplomatic efforts, offers a momentary reprieve for a region devastated by conflict. While humanitarian partners race to deliver aid, the focus shifts to ensuring sustained support for the displaced and injured amidst Gaza’s deeply strained infrastructure.

This 42-day phase is expected to lay the groundwork for further negotiations, raising hopes for de-escalation and long-term resolutions. However, the region’s path forward remains uncertain, as the ceasefire’s durability will be critical to averting further tragedy.
