BEIJING: The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has announced a significant oilfield discovery in the eastern South China Sea, with proven reserves exceeding 100 million tonnes.

The Huizhou 19-6 oilfield, located 170 km off Shenzhen, is China’s first large-scale integrated clastic oilfield found in deep to ultra-deep layers. CNOOC hailed this as a breakthrough in offshore oil exploration.

Situated at an average depth of 100 metres, the site’s test drilling has yielded 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic metres of natural gas per day, showcasing its potential for large-scale production.

CNOOC highlighted the challenges of deep-sea drilling, including high temperatures, high pressures, and complex geological conditions. Despite these obstacles, this discovery reinforces China’s energy security strategy and its commitment to offshore resource exploration.

With growing global energy demands, this discovery positions China as a key player in deepwater oil and gas development, further strengthening its offshore capabilities.
