DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 20 out of a planned 40 air-conditioned rest areas for delivery riders across the Emirate. This initiative aims to improve road safety, enhance the well-being of delivery riders, and reduce road incidents by providing comfortable waiting areas for riders between deliveries. By offering these facilities, RTA hopes to boost rider satisfaction and encourage compliance with traffic laws.

RTA’s Director-General, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Dubai’s Traffic Safety Strategy, which aims for “Zero Fatalities” and to make Dubai the world leader in traffic safety. The construction of these rest areas also responds to the rapid growth in the delivery sector, with over 2,500 companies and 40,000 delivery bikes now operating in Dubai.

The locations for these rest areas were chosen based on operational data and demand for delivery services, with rest areas built in key locations such as Hessa Street, Al Barsha, Al Karama, Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, Business Bay, and others. Each rest area is designed to minimize sunlight and provide a comfortable environment with air conditioning, snack vending machines, water dispensers, and mobile charging stations. They can accommodate up to 10 riders and include ample parking for motorcycles.

To further support the delivery sector, RTA has introduced the Delivery Service Excellence Award, recognising top-performing companies and drivers. The award promotes traffic safety, adherence to regulations, and service quality. The best companies are judged on safety, quality, and international standards, while the best drivers are evaluated on their safety record, performance, and commitment to enhancing service quality.
