Dubai’s 6,500 km walkway network will feature scenic routes, pedestrian bridges, and smart app integration, boosting urban mobility by 2040.

DUBAI: Dubai is set to become a pedestrian-friendly city with the launch of the ambitious Dubai Walk Master Plan. Approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the plan aims to develop a 6,500 km walkway network across 160 areas in Dubai by 2040.

The initiative will introduce 3,300 km of new walkways while upgrading 2,300 km of existing routes. It also includes the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses to improve connectivity. This move aligns with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, which promotes the ‘20-Minute City’ concept, enabling 80% of residents to access daily services within 20 minutes.

His Highness emphasised that the project aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, boost soft mobility, and establish Dubai as a world leader in walkable, sustainable urban living. “The plan will increase pedestrian and soft mobility from 13% to 25% by 2040,” he said.

The Future Loop, a futuristic 2 km elevated walkway near the Museum of the Future, will connect key landmarks like Dubai International Financial Centre, Emirates Towers, and Dubai World Trade Centre. This air-conditioned walkway will feature shaded areas, green spaces, and interactive zones.

The plan also introduces three walkway categories — scenic-leisure paths, city connectivity routes, and community walkways — to connect waterfronts, urban trails, and residential areas. Roads like Al Ittihad, Tripoli, and Dubai-Al Ain will see new bridges linking key areas like Al Nahda, Mirdif, and Dubai Silicon Oasis.

A new smart app will guide pedestrians with route maps, step tracking, and user reviews. Walkers can earn reward points redeemable for discounts and digital wallet credits.

This visionary project aims to redefine Dubai’s urban landscape, promoting wellness, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
