DUBAI: The constant disruptions in technology and content creation are generating more opportunities, concluded leaders from the Indian government, media and entertainment, who gathered at Expo 2020 Dubai’s India Pavilion, as part of the Indian Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (Media & Entertainment) Fortnight.

Apurva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, India, revealed that there is a lot of scope for collaboration between India and the UAE in terms of production and post-production for the benefit of both countries: “Change is always for the better. It has opened a lot of opportunities for everyone, not only for big media houses but smaller media houses can get visibility, not only in their country but across the world.”

Shekhar Kapur, Film Director and Chairman, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) elaborated on the consequences of the constantly evolving technology that disseminates content, “The culture of storytelling shifts every time content shifts. Our predictions are based on what’s recently been happening – for the last two or five years, but as technology changes constantly, you’ve got to be ready and you have to really understand that content is a social construct, and it keeps shifting and rediscovering itself. Technology is the way we disseminate that content.”

During a fireside chat, Vikram Chandra, Founder, editor (a platform for personalised video), asked Shekhar Kapur for his thoughts on navigating the old and new forms of content dissemination and how to target audiences.

Kapur said, “Confusion leads to chaos, and there’s nothing better for creativity than chaos. The moment everything gets structured, content and creativity go down. Change is good – each technology will find its way and you can’t predict what’s going to happen.

“If you ask me which way it’s going to go – we’re going to see the end of big corporations. We’ve seen really good content from Netflix, but unless it gets into gaming, it will die. And then there will be another form of gaming…”

Kapur also discussed the tribal nature of society, which is reflected in the information we receive on social media; they need compassion towards views that differ from our own, and the importance of trust to enable creativity to thrive. Recounting a discussion with Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai, regarding Expo’s landmark spectacle, Why? The Musical, which Kapur directed, he said, “HE Reem Al Hashimy, said, ‘I trust you. And when trust meets creativity, the sky is the limit.’ Creativity has to go together with trust yet we spend half our lives trying to find trust. The last time someone asked to see the whole film before the film was made, I said, ‘Did you ever go to Picasso and ask to see the painting before he started to paint?’ That’s not what creativity is about.”
