Dubai: Ghanaian nurse Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti has been named the winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025, receiving a prestigious USD 250,000 prize. Presented by HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, the ceremony in Dubai recognised Naomi’s outstanding impact on oncology care, nurse training, and health equity across Africa.
Naomi, Head of Nursing at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Oncology Centre in Ghana, was chosen from over 100,000 applicants representing 199 countries. Her pioneering work includes launching specialist oncology training, developing Ghana’s postgraduate oncology nursing curriculum, and mentoring over 48 African nurses. She has collaborated with institutions like the Cross Cancer Institute, AORTIC, and ASCO, ensuring African nurses have access to world-class education while shaping cancer care policies continent-wide.
HE Sheikh Nahyan said, “Nurses are the first line of defence in healthcare. This award reflects the UAE’s deep gratitude and respect for their compassionate service and our ongoing commitment to honouring their role in global wellbeing.” He praised Naomi and fellow finalists for embodying the spirit of humanity, resilience, and service.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, also extended his congratulations via a special message, lauding the role of nurses in building healthier societies.
Naomi’s reaction was heartfelt: “This award belongs to every nurse across Ghana, Africa, and beyond who leads with resilience and courage. Nursing is a force for justice and hope.”
Her win also highlighted the mission of Aster DM Healthcare, which founded the award in 2021 to elevate the nursing profession globally. Dr. Azad Moopen praised Naomi’s leadership and innovation, while Alisha Moopen added, “Her story is a testament to the quiet heroism nurses demonstrate daily.”
Nine other global finalists from countries including Switzerland, UAE, Kenya, and India were honoured for their exceptional service, selected through a rigorous process by Ernst & Young LLP and an international jury panel.
