Aster Hospital Mankhool achieves successful brain tumour recovery for a Filipino healthcare worker with rare falcine meningioma.

Dubai: A 41-year-old Filipino healthcare assistant, Ms Jovelyn Sison Omes, has made a remarkable brain tumour recovery following a complex surgery at Aster Hospital, Mankhool. Diagnosed with a falcine meningioma, a rare brain tumour accounting for only 9% of all meningiomas, Ms Omes was experiencing severe headaches, double vision, and a full-body seizure when she sought medical attention in late November 2024.

Upon admission, detailed scans revealed a non-cancerous tumour the size of a tennis ball on the right side of her brain, extending across critical brain regions and causing cerebral oedema. Dr Prakash Nair, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Aster Hospital, led the operation, describing the case as both urgent and delicate due to the tumour’s proximity to vital areas governing motor function.

On 28 November 2024, the surgical team performed a Simpson Grade 1 excision—the highest grade of tumour resection, significantly reducing recurrence risk to below 9% over a decade. The procedure involved advanced neurosurgical tools such as a high-powered microscope and ultrasonic aspirator, ensuring precise tumour removal without blood transfusion or neurological damage.

Ms Omes recovered rapidly, moving to the ICU post-surgery and being weaned off ventilator support within 24 hours. A follow-up MRI confirmed total tumour removal. She was discharged by 5 December 2024, showing no signs of neurological complications. Her recovery highlights the success of early diagnosis and world-class neurosurgical intervention.

Dr Nair emphasised the importance of seeking medical help when symptoms arise. “This case underscores how advanced care and timely diagnosis can transform outcomes. We are proud to offer this level of expertise,” he said.

Expressing her gratitude, Ms Omes stated, “I’m pain-free, seizure-free, and back to work. Early intervention truly saved my life.”

This brain tumour recovery stands as a testament to Aster Hospital Mankhool’s commitment to clinical excellence, compassionate care, and innovation in complex neurosurgery.
