MAKKAH: Saudi Arabia has issued a crucial heat warning to all Hajj 2025 pilgrims, urging them to prepare for extreme weather conditions during this year’s pilgrimage. Temperatures are expected to soar up to 47°C, alongside potential thunderstorms and dangerously low visibility caused by dust storms.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has released an official advisory stating that pilgrims should brace for daytime temperatures between 40°C and 47°C, while nights will remain warm, ranging from 27°C to 32°C. Humidity levels could vary between 15% and 60%, increasing discomfort and the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Dr Ayman Ghulam, CEO of the NCM, warned that northerly to northwesterly winds blowing at 25 to 35 km/h could stir up dust, reducing visibility across open areas and key access roads to the holy sites. Additionally, thunderstorms may develop over the Taif highlands between the 8th and 13th of Dhu Al Hijjah, potentially extending to Mecca with strong downdrafts intensifying dust conditions.
Authorities have strongly advised all pilgrims to take preventive measures, including staying hydrated, using umbrellas or hats, and closely following weather updates. Safety tips are being circulated to ensure pilgrims are well-informed and protected.
In a bid to enhance pilgrim comfort, Saudi Arabia has launched several initiatives. One standout is the cooled pedestrian walkway in Mecca, introduced under the “Cooled Roads Initiative,” which aims to lower surface temperatures and offer relief amid the summer heat.
Health experts have raised concerns about the increasing threat of heat-related illnesses, linking these conditions to the growing effects of global warming in the region. With millions set to perform Hajj, the call for caution and preparedness has never been more urgent.
