How is Eid-Al-Fitr celebration date determined?

Traditionally Eid al-Fitr begins once the moon marking the first day of the month of Shawwal is sighted. This eagerly awaited moment marks a bittersweet end to the month of Ramadan. It is mandated on all Muslims to celebrate the festival with joy and cease fasting. Eid-Al-Fitr celebrations last until 3 days. As Muslims follow the Islamic Lunar Calendar, the exact date of Eid varies from location to location depending on whether the moon was sighted on the 29th fast of the Ramadan month. If it isn’t, then on the 30th day of the holy month, fasting resumes while the next day thereafter is automatically celebrated as Eid-Al-Fitr.

What is Zakat-Al-Fitr?

Muslims must give Zakat-Al-Fitr a mandated charitable donation to the needy right before the Eid Prayers are offered in the wee hours of the day of Eid-Al-Fitr. This is religiously obligatory since even the less fortunate brothers and sisters in Islam can joyfully celebrate the much awaited festive occasion with the support from their privileged brothers and sisters in Islam to make it an equitable festival for all not just the ones who can afford it.

Eid is a day of gratitude and celebration to thank Allah for the endurance and guidance he offered during the holy month. Apart from acts of worship and charity, people dress in their best attire, meet and greet friends and loved ones, hold feasts and treats with traditional sweets and often partake in local cultural events and entertainment to mark the occassion.
