‘Never experienced such tremors before’, residents jolted as earthquake hits Delhi-NCR
New Delhi: A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck Delhi and nearby areas early Monday, startling residents and prompting many to rush outdoors in panic.
The National Center for Seismology reported the quake’s epicentre in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan, with a focal depth of five kilometres. Tremors were felt at 5:36 am, accompanied by a loud sound in some areas. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Anil Kumar, a resident of Sita Ram Bazar, said, “I felt a strong vibration and got scared. My wife and I woke up our child and rushed outside. Being a heart patient, I panicked even more.”
Sundar Lal, another local, initially mistook the noise for monkeys on his terrace. “We soon realised it was an earthquake and ran outside,” he said, adding that the strong tremors were terrifying but brief.
A CCTV clip from Budh Vihar showed a car’s horn honking on its own as the quake struck. Deepa, a West Delhi resident, compared it to a 2012 quake but found this one more intense. “We were all very scared,” she said.
Anil from Nehru Nagar grabbed his two-year-old daughter and rushed outside with his wife upon feeling the tremors. “There was a loud sound and strong jolts. We panicked,” he shared.
Delhi Police reassured citizens via X, stating, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” and urged them to call emergency helpline 112 in case of need. Source-PTI
