WHO announces upcoming polio vaccination campaign in Gaza
Fri 30 Aug 2024NEW YORK: Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organisation (WHO) representative for the occupied Palestinian territories, has announced the launch of a two-phase polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, set to begin on September 1. The campaign is a collaborative effort involving the Palestinian Ministry of Health, WHO, UNICEF, and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Speaking at a press briefing in New York, Peeperkorn emphasized the importance of this campaign, especially in a region where healthcare resources are often stretched thin due to ongoing conflicts and restrictions. The primary focus is on safeguarding the health of children under the age of ten, a vulnerable group that requires protection from the debilitating effects of polio.
During each phase of the campaign, over 640,000 children will receive two doses of a new oral polio vaccine (type 2). The vaccine is specifically designed to combat the resurgence of polio in areas where the virus still poses a significant threat. By administering the vaccine in two phases, the campaign aims to ensure comprehensive coverage and boost immunity among the young population.
This initiative is not just about preventing polio but also about strengthening the overall public health infrastructure in Gaza. It represents a critical step in reducing the risk of polio outbreaks and demonstrates the commitment of international organizations to support public health in regions facing humanitarian challenges. The success of this campaign could set a precedent for future health initiatives in similarly affected areas.
