Disney’s animated film, Moana 2 was released in theatres globally on November 27, 2024 and is a sequel to the 2016 Oscar nominated movie of the same name.

REPRESENTATION

The first Moana movie showcased polynesian culture quite beautifully through its musical numbers and storyline. Unsurprisingly, the sequel has also done a great job of incorporating cultural elements and staying true to Polynesian mythology. The story of Moana 2 follows Moana, now a ‘wayfinder’ with a crew of villagers on a journey to find other islands with people. She is often seen blowing a conch horn, which is symbolic of communication through waters for many Pacific cultures.

BRILLIANT ANIMATION

One thing Disney movies never go wrong in is its animation and character design. The movie, throughout its runtime of one hour and forty minutes, is an absolute visual treat. The best ones were, without a doubt, the underwater scenes. Moana’s ancestors and her grandmother appearing as underwater creatures (a whale and a stingray) were beautifully done and so was the final battle, when they managed to bring back Motufetu.

MOANA’S CHARACTER

In the first movie, she struggles to convince her community to let her voyage the sea but now she has a different set of worries – being a leader who can foster unity among her crew members and appease her little sister who hates the possibility of her big sister never returning. An interesting detail in this movie is Moana’s wardrobe – her costume contains more white fabric than red and orange unlike the first movie and this could be symbolic of her growing into her adult self. Thus, while Moana 2 may not have surpassed its predecessor in certain aspects, Moana’s evolution as a character was portrayed perfectly.
