Vijay Sethupathi’s latest film, Maharaja, has made a huge splash in Indian cinema, becoming the most-watched Indian film on Netflix in 2024. Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, this action thriller not only captivated audiences in cinemas but also made waves on the digital platform.

Maharaja hit theatres in June 2024 and quickly became a blockbuster, earning over Rs. 100 crore worldwide. When it launched on Netflix on July 12, 2024, it racked up 18.6 million views, outpacing other major films like Crew, which starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon and collected 17.9 million views.

The film’s success on Netflix shows its wide appeal, reaching beyond just Tamil-speaking viewers. It has been a constant presence on Netflix’s trending list, proving its popularity with a diverse audience.

The story follows a barber, played by Vijay Sethupathi, who seeks revenge after his home is robbed. The plot takes a twist when he reports the theft of something named ‘Lakshmi,’ leading to confusion about whether ‘Lakshmi’ is a person or an object. This intriguing storyline, combined with Sethupathi’s strong performance, has captivated viewers.

The cast includes Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Divya Bharathi, Abhirami, and Singampuli, all of whom have received praise for their performances. The film’s direction and engaging plot have been well received.

Maharaja has also achieved international recognition, trending in the top 10 lists in eight countries, even six weeks after its Netflix debut. This record-breaking viewership highlights the growing global interest in regional Indian films.
