SHARJAH: The Sharjah Literature Festival brings a vibrant fusion of literature and arts, highlighting the emirate’s cultural richness. Running until January 21, the event offers captivating daily programmes, drawing diverse audiences from across the Emirates.
Set in the square opposite University City Hall, the festival creates an enchanting atmosphere with engaging seminars, dialogues, and live music featuring instruments like the qanun, oud, and saxophone. These activities celebrate literature while blending creativity and tradition.
Over the past three days, visitors have enjoyed unique cultural experiences, including a book fair, food, shopping, and artistic showcases. These offerings reflect Sharjah’s role as a cultural capital merging heritage and modernity.
Key sessions included “Imagination Nation,” where Emirati authors Badriya Al Shamsi and Fatima Al Mazrouei discussed children’s literature’s role in shaping future generations. Another highlight was “UAE Through Arab Eyes,” exploring Arab perspectives on the UAE’s development.
In “Pages of Wonder,” Dr Nadia Al Najjar and Fatima Al Amri highlighted how children’s books serve as educational tools. “Treasures of the Gulf” saw Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam delve into the UAE’s myths and history.
Other engaging talks included Dr Ibrahim Galadari’s autobiography, “Memoirs of an Emirati Doctor,” and Hamad Bin Sarai’s “Footprints of History,” which explored Emirati historical eras. Composer Ibrahim Jumaa’s contributions to Emirati art were honoured in “Personal Imprints: Timeless Melodies.”
The workshops corner is abuzz with activities for all ages. Highlights include Arabic calligraphy in jewellery design, storytelling sessions, astronomy workshops blending Emirati culture, pottery painting, and creating musk and candles for a sensory reading experience.
