RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has launched the “Film Deposit” initiative through the National Film Archive, aiming to preserve the Kingdom’s cinematic heritage for future generations. The initiative, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), was announced by the Saudi Film Commission, which emphasised the importance of collecting and safeguarding Saudi films from various sources, including companies and filmmakers.
The goal of this initiative is not just to preserve films but also to document the rich cinematic history of Saudi Arabia. By doing so, the Commission hopes to capture the cultural and artistic essence of the nation as reflected in its films. These films will be securely stored at a designated headquarters, ensuring that they remain intact and accessible for years to come.
The Saudi Arabia “Film Deposit” initiative is already off to a strong start with the establishment of the Saudi Film Registry. This registry contains data on over 1,000 films, including feature films and documentaries, highlighting the significant efforts being made to compile and organise the Kingdom’s cinematic works.
