MOSCOW: The United Arab Emirates is showcasing its rich craft heritage for the first time at the sixth edition of Moscow Interior and Design Week, held at the Central Exhibition Hall (Manège) from May 21 to May 25. This major international event features more than 1,100 companies from Russia and around the world, specialising in furniture, interiors, and design.
The UAE’s national pavilion was organised with support from the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council. It highlights modern interpretations of traditional Emirati crafts through a range of unique items made by skilled Emirati women. Visitors can see beautifully designed lamps, clay pots, Murano glass vessels, fruit baskets made from plant-based leather, and steel chairs painted with cultural motifs.
Reem BinKaram, Director of the Irthi Council, delivered a keynote speech titled “Reinvesting in Heritage.” She spoke about the Council’s work in teaching women craft skills and helping them create sustainable businesses from their art. These efforts not only preserve tradition but also help women reach global markets.
She shared how Emirati crafts have earned global recognition at major design events like Design Miami, the London Design Festival, and Milan Design Week. Their success is putting UAE’s handmade heritage on the international design map.
The UAE joins 15 other countries at the exhibition, including China, which also has a national pavilion. This year’s theme focuses on nature-inspired interior design, a trend visible throughout the displays. The UAE’s presentation connects local traditions with global design, showing how culture and innovation can blend beautifully.
This participation is a proud moment for the UAE, reflecting its growing influence in the global design and cultural space.
