Ronaldo included in Portugal’s first squad after scoreless Euro 2024

LISBON: Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has named Cristiano Ronaldo in his squad for the first two Nations League matches, following Ronaldo’s disappointing performance at Euro 2024. The Associated Press reported on Friday that Martínez announced the squad for Portugal’s home games against Croatia on 5th September and Scotland on 8th September.

At 39, Ronaldo is the top scorer in international men’s soccer with 130 goals. However, he did not score in any of Portugal’s five games at Euro 2024, and the team was eliminated by France in the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout.

Martínez has said that after Euro 2024, the team is beginning a “new cycle” with the 2026 World Cup in mind, where Ronaldo will be 41 years old. Despite his age and recent struggles, Martínez has reinstated Ronaldo in the starting lineup. This comes after former coach Fernando Santos had benched Ronaldo during the 2022 World Cup, a decision that surprised many.

Ronaldo had scored in Portugal’s opening win against Ghana but went scoreless in the following four games, including a quarter-final loss to Morocco.
