Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem smashes men’s javelin Olympic record

PARIS: In the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Arshad Nadeem delivered an impressive performance on his second attempt breaking the Olympic record. His throw was not only spectacular but also officially recorded, marking a significant achievement in the event. Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion came second bagging a silver medal.

Nadeem, representing Pakistan, made a powerful throw that soared well past the “OR” boxes, which are used to measure the distance of the throws. His javelin landed at an extraordinary distance of 92.97 meters, setting a new Olympic record. This throw surpassed the previous record of 92.72 meters, which had been held since the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra from India was the defending champion coming into tonight’s competition. However, he ceded the top spot to Pakistan javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, who threw an Olympic record of 92.97m to take the gold medal. Neeraj Chopra from India won silver at the Paris Olympics with his season-best throw of 89.45m.

Earlier, Neeraj had qualified for the javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics with an 89.34m throw (Group B). It was Neeraj’s best throw at a global championship and his second-best ever, after 89.94m in the Stockholm Diamond League.

Arshad finished his set with a 91.79m throw. This is Pakistan’s first individual gold medal ever at the Olympics. Grenada’s Anderson Peters won bronze with 88.54m.
