ABU DHABI: Space42, the UAE-based space technology company, has launched the first High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) manufacturing facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Built under its subsidiary Mira Aerospace, this new facility in Abu Dhabi marks a major step forward for the country’s space ambitions.

The 4,500-square-metre site will produce more than 20 HAPS unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) every year. These advanced aircraft support important civil, environmental, and defence tasks from high in the atmosphere. Unlike satellites, HAPS fly closer to Earth, offering real-time monitoring and data.

This facility is key to Space42’s mission of placing the UAE at the heart of global aerospace innovation. It supports the UAE’s National Space Strategy 2030 by building strong local abilities in space tech, research, and production.

Mira Aerospace CEO Khaled Al Marzooqi said, “As the global demand for HAPS accelerates, Space42 is making strategic investments to strengthen our leadership in this growing market.”

Space42 is also working with international firms like ICEYE to build satellites in the UAE, further boosting local talent and infrastructure. This partnership will help develop the UAE’s Earth Observation (EO) Space Program, which focuses on using satellites to monitor and support life on Earth.

The company aims to grow its global presence by investing in facilities that can produce and manage technology at scale. The new HAPS hub supports this goal by building in-house skills, creating long-term value, and helping the UAE lead in space-based connectivity.

In addition, Mira Aerospace has partnered with XRANGE to set up a permanent testing site for HAPS vehicles. The company has also developed two new payloads — one for Earth observation and the other for telecommunications — that support areas such as agriculture, disaster response, and urban planning.

Space42 has become a global leader in HAPS and was the first in the world to test 5G from the stratosphere using heavy aircraft. Its new facility in Abu Dhabi strengthens the UAE’s position as a key player in the future of space technology.
