OpenAI is gearing up to introduce GPT-5, the next evolution of its AI technology, following the upcoming release of GPT-4.5, also known internally as ‘Orion.’ This strategic move aims to streamline OpenAI’s AI tools into a more unified and efficient experience.
CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that GPT-5 will integrate multiple AI capabilities into a single model, eliminating the need for users to switch between different versions. This development follows GPT-4.5, expected in the coming weeks, which Altman described as “our last non-chain-of-thought model.”
He further stated, “A top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.”
OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5:
— Sam Altman (@sama) February 12, 2025
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.

GPT-5 is expected to bring major improvements in reasoning and adaptability, allowing it to handle a broader range of applications seamlessly. Unlike its predecessors, it will function as an all-in-one AI system, ensuring a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.
However, the road to GPT-5 has been challenging. Reports indicate that training costs have exceeded half a billion dollars, and technical setbacks have slowed development. To enhance its learning capabilities, OpenAI has increasingly relied on a combination of synthetic and human-curated datasets.
Upon release, GPT-5 will be available to all ChatGPT users, with free-tier access to its standard intelligence setting. Meanwhile, Plus subscribers will enjoy an enhanced version, and Pro users will gain access to an even more advanced model with improved reasoning and accuracy.
Altman also confirmed that the paid tiers will introduce additional features, including voice, canvas, search, and deep research tools, ensuring an enriched AI experience for users.
