UAE integrates genetic testing to Emirate’s Premarital Screening Programme
Thu 12 Sep 2024ABU DHABI: The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), UAE, has announced that genetic testing will be a key part of the premarital screening process for Emiratis planning to marry in Abu Dhabi, starting 21st October 2024. This initiative helps couples make informed health decisions by using genetic insights.
After a successful pilot launched in 2022, where over 800 couples were tested, it was found that 86% achieved genetic compatibility. The remaining 14% received guidance on family planning based on their genetic results.

The genetic test screens for 570 genes linked to over 840 genetic disorders, including those that can cause vision and hearing loss, blood clotting issues, developmental delays, and organ failures. Couples are encouraged to consult with healthcare professionals to understand the risks and treatment options. The test is available in 22 primary care centres across Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain.
This premarital genetic screening identifies whether couples carry genetic mutations that could be passed on to their children, helping to prevent genetic diseases. DoH urges couples to complete the test early, as results take up to 14 days.
Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji from the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre emphasized that this programme plays a key role in detecting inherited diseases and offering genetic counseling. Dr. Asma Al Mannaei of DoH highlighted that integrating genetic testing positions Abu Dhabi as a leader in healthcare, aiming to prevent genetic diseases and support early interventions.
