Humans are social animals; however, these social animals forget to socialize with themselves. Yes, I’m talking about self-love.

Self-love is the key to a happy healthy long life. The three things that show how much you love yourself include: how much you move in a day, how many lives you’ve touched in a day and how you have pampered yourself in a day.

Movement boosts endorphins that energize you. Also, connecting with other humans is good for your soul, business and mood.

Self-love, self-care and self-respect — If you learn the word self, you might understand the meaning of your existence and start working for it. In this article, I’m sharing my view on nourishing your senses, which is one of the important ways to self-love.

Breathing declutters your mind, a suitable sleeping regime surprises your body by boosting your metabolism and restoring your system. And now comes a healthy atmosphere, where I would like to introduce you to a well-known therapy for your senses – Aromatherapy.

The Aura of Aromatherapy

It’s a 6000-year-old therapy used most often to relax our system. Aromatherapy works through topical application through massage, scented baths, cosmetics and perfume.

Inhalation is another way with the help of diffusers, aroma stones, room spray, washroom as well as floor cleaners. Also, oral capsules with diluted essential oil in gelatin cover are used for various diseases.

Aromatherapy is based on two kinds of oils – essential oils and carrier oils. Carrier oils dilute the essential oils and help carry them into the skin, e.g. coconut, avocado, olive, almond, jojoba, rosehip, grapeseed and primrose oil. The formula for aroma oil is 0.5-1% of essential oil for sensitive skin and 1%-2.5% for normal skin. Its action depends on the activation of olfactory stimulation which immediately changes blood pressure, pulse rate, muscle tension, blood flow and body temperature once it comes in contact with a particular essential oil.

The Advantages of Aromatherapy

The primary benefit of Aromatherapy is for people who are anxious, have mood swings, insomnia, and skin infections – bacterial or fungal.

Let me illustrate a few essential oils and their significant benefits-

Basil oil – For migraines
Chamomile oil- For anxiety and eczema
Citronella – An insect repellent
Eucalyptus- For cold and cough
Lavender – An antiseptic
Rosemary – For hair growth
Tea tree – For acne-prone skin infection
Thyme – A stress reliever

Essential oils, as I have mentioned earlier, are also used in aroma candles and diffusers. The most commonly used for inhalation are clary sage, bergamot, ylang ylang, patchouli, and tea tree. However, for inhalation, I would say you have to be cautious if you are using the following oils:

  1. Rosemary can’t be used for blood pressure patients as it works like a stimulant
  2. Fennel, sage and aniseed oil can’t be used for patients having tumour or cyst issues due to their high estrogen dominance
  3. Camphor, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, and wintergreen have high toxicity if used in high doses

The most common side effects of overuse of essential oils are skin rashes, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, nausea, seizures, drowsiness and redness in the eyes.

As essential oils have not been marketed well, and we have only a few aromatherapists across the globe, a word of advice – Consult a therapist before using any oil regularly and always remember it’s a therapy to calm your senses and not a cure for any disease.
