“Charge!” cried the cavalier, and as if on cue, the mounted steed galloped towards the target with a sudden burst of exploding energy. Thus began the exciting game of Tent Pegging, a sport begotten from the wombs of battle games fought in the annals of cavalier history in the Indian subcontinent.

Not for the faint-hearted, the sport is played by riders with a lance or sword in hand and carried by their highly trained hooved beasts. The soft swoosh of the sharpened blade slicing its target oddly complemented the thundering hooves as man and beast become one in this thrilling sport.

To learn more about this sport, we met with Ahmed Afsar (Managing Director – Equiwings Sports), a well-known person in the lesser-known sport of tent pegging. Unlike polo and show-jumping, which have been conspicuously the sport of the rich, tent pegging was not given due recognition by the equestrian discipline. But that is about to change, thanks to the collective effort of people like Ahmed Afsar, who works in tandem with the International Tent Pegging Federation to promote tent pegging around the globe.

With 28 countries members of the federation, the passionate promoters are working hard to add the sport to the Olympics.

Watch the interview to learn more about tent pegging, its history and its future from Ahmed Afsar.
