DUBAI: Dubai-based tchoukball players of various nationalities teamed up with the Switzerland Pavilion to introduce Expo 2020 Dubai visitors to this ultra-inclusive sport.

Featuring elements of handball, the non-contact sport was invented in Switzerland to promote peaceful participation with limited injury risk, and is accessible to players of all ages and abilities. The first of three events took place at Aussie Park, inside Expo’s Sports, Fitness and Wellbeing Hub.

The game involves two teams of seven players throwing a ball at a small trampoline-like frame in the goal area. A goal is scored when the ball bounces off the frame and hits the ground outside the ‘forbidden zone’ (a half-circle around the net), and the opposing team does not catch it before it hits the ground.

Tchoukball was developed in the 1970s by Swiss biologist Dr. Hermann Brandt, who wanted to create a game where physical injury was not as prevalent as in other popular sports. Although the game is fast and very dynamic, no contact is involved. As a result, the sport has been celebrated by the United Nations.

The tchoukball activation is due to take place again at Expo 2020 Dubai on 19 February and 5 March.
