NEW DELHI: The Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) has started a major project to address climate change in agriculture. This project, called the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA), aims to help crops, livestock, horticulture, and fisheries withstand extreme weather.

NICRA will focus on areas in India that often face harsh weather conditions like droughts, floods, frost, and heatwaves. Right now, places from Kerala in the South to Himachal Pradesh in the North are experiencing heavy floods and landslides. These areas need urgent help, and ICAR’s project aims to provide just that.

“The NICRA project is meant to educate farmers about how climate change affects agriculture,” said Ramnath Thakur, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, in the Rajya Sabha, India’s Upper House of Parliament. “We are running programs to teach farmers about climate change and how to use climate-resilient technologies.”

ICAR is a national organisation under the Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for coordinating agricultural education and research across India. Through NICRA, ICAR hopes to spread awareness and provide farmers with the tools they need to cope with changing climate conditions. This project is a crucial step towards building a more resilient agricultural sector in India.
