Dubai: Thanks to the UAE’s forward-thinking leadership, the UAE is now a leading investor in renewable energy and has made significant progress in reducing emissions from the energy sector. On World Environment Day, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the UAE’s leadership in climate action.
The Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy shows that the UAE is one of the top users of solar energy globally, ranking 6th in per capita solar energy consumption. The country is increasing its use of clean and renewable energy and improving energy efficiency to protect the environment. DEWA is committed to the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, aiming for 100% clean energy production by 2050.
DEWA’s key projects include the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world, with a planned capacity of over 5,000MW by 2030. This park will reduce over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually and holds records for the tallest CSP tower and largest thermal energy storage plant.

DEWA’s green hydrogen project at the solar park supports the UAE’s competitiveness in the green hydrogen market. Additionally, the hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, the first in the GCC, will generate 250MW of electricity using water stored in the Hatta Dam.
DEWA is also building a large water desalination project in Hassyan using Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology, aiming for 100% desalinated water production using clean energy by 2030.
The EV Green Charger Initiative, launched in 2014, has established over 700 charging stations in Dubai, promoting green mobility. DEWA’s annual sustainability reports, issued since 2013, transparently showcase its achievements and efforts in sustainability.
