ABU DHABI: Chapter Zero UAE, the UAE’s new chapter of the Climate Governance Initiative, has been launched to empower UAE board directors to manage climate risks and opportunities effectively. This initiative aligns with the nation’s goals for a net-zero future, marking the 33rd global chapter of the Climate Governance Initiative. The launch, held in Abu Dhabi, was attended by H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) and Chairperson of Chapter Zero UAE’s Advisory Board.

Chapter Zero UAE follows the World Economic Forum’s Principles for Effective Climate Governance, helping UAE companies lead on climate-related practices. Members will gain access to specialised training, peer learning, networking events, newsletters, certified educational programs, and essential resources to incorporate climate governance into their organisational decisions.

Sheikha Shamma highlighted the UAE’s pioneering role in sustainability, noting that Chapter Zero UAE will equip corporate leaders with tools to embed climate governance in business practices, advancing the nation’s goal of net zero by 2050. Julie Baddeley, Chair of the Climate Governance Initiative’s Governing Board, emphasised the essential role of board directors in climate action, especially with COP29 approaching.

Ahmed Al Calily, Chief Strategy & Risk Officer at Mubadala, praised Chapter Zero UAE as a critical platform for advancing climate governance, aligning with Mubadala’s commitment to responsible investing. Mohamed Al Marzooqi, HSBC UAE CEO, also expressed support, noting HSBC’s role as a founding donor and the importance of boardroom oversight in driving the UAE’s carbon transition.

The Chapter will work closely with key partners, including Aurora50, HSBC, Mubadala, UAE University, University of Dubai, and Simmons & Simmons. Its structured network of advisory boards, committees, and members aims to guide board directors across the UAE toward impactful climate governance.
