FUJAIRAH: Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, the Fujairah Environment Authority launched a book titled “Whales and Dolphins of Fujairah and the Arabian Region.” This book, the third in a series on Fujairah’s natural history, highlights the significance of whales and dolphins in the region’s marine ecosystems. Authored by Robert Baldwin and Balazs Buzas, it draws on nearly five years of research, including field studies under the Fujairah Whale and Dolphin Research Project.

The book emphasizes the importance of these marine mammals in relation to human activities like fishing, shipping, and tourism. It also sheds light on the challenges faced by these species due to climate change and other environmental pressures. The research uncovered a surprising diversity of whales and dolphins in Fujairah, with 12 different species recorded, representing a significant portion of global cetacean diversity.

The launch of this book is a key milestone in Fujairah’s efforts to raise awareness and promote the conservation of its unique marine environment. The Fujairah Research Centre, supported by the Environment Authority, continues to play a crucial role in ongoing research and conservation initiatives.
