The steamship SS Great Britain was launched on this day in 1843. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the first ocean-going craft with an iron hull or screw propeller and the largest vessel afloat in the world.

Did you know that:

• Astronomer Johannes Kepler had an epiphany and developed his theory of the geometrical basis of the universe while teaching in Graz on this day in 1595
• The first US women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls NY, organised by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott on this day in 1848
• Tom and Jerry first appeared under their own names in the cartoon “The Midnight Snack” by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera on this day in 1941
